Nebulisers for Sale or Hire

When a device is prescribed to help you breathe easier,

 we can help you out

A Nebuliser is a machine that converts liquid medication into a fine mist, which is breathed in through a mask or mouthpiece. In this way medication is able to reach the lungs.

Nebulisers may be used for the treatment of conditions that affect the airways and lungs such as asthma, bronchiectasis, COPD and cystic fibrosis.

Who needs a nebuliser?

A nebuliser is sometimes used to administer medication in an acute setting such as a hospital, after hours surgery or general practice for patient with an acute respiratory illness or exacerbation.

Some people with more severe chronic respiratory conditions may be prescribed nebulised medication short term following an exacerbation or may, as part of their individual management plan, require a nebuliser at home from time to time for symptoms which are more difficult to control.

Nebulisers are not commonly used as part of standard asthma management as recent evidence shows that use of an inhaler via a spacer is as effective a method of medication delivery.

Important Information

Before hiring or purchasing a nebuliser, discuss with your doctor first to ensure a nebuliser would be of benefit.  CanBreathe does not sell or hire Nebulisers without your doctor's approval - the medication for the nebuliser requires a doctors prescription.

To access a nebuliser from CanBreathe you will need a referral letter from your doctor stating that he or she feels that you require this device. This letter can be faxed to us straight from the doctor's surgery, posted, emailed, or delivered to us in person (by appointment).

  • Generally, nebulisers are not preferred because they deliver a high dose of medication which can increase the chance of side effects.
  • In most instances a handheld inhaler device together with a spacer is just as effective as a Nebuliser, to get medication to the lungs.
  • Research proves that spacers are just as effective in acute asthma for adults and more effective for children than Nebulisers.

If the use of a Nebuliser is recommended for a short period of time, then you may want to consider hiring a Nebuliser.

If the use of a Nebuliser is recommended long-term, on an ongoing basis, then you may want to buy a Nebuliser.

Purchasing a Nebuliser

We have a range of Nebulisers available for purchase.  CanBreathe Nurse Educators can assist to determine which model would best suit your individual requirements.

Points to consider before buying a Nebuliser:

  1. Is the nebuliser suitable for the medicine you have been prescribed. Not all medications can be used with types of nebulisers.
  2. Your medical condition— depending on your condition you will need your nebulisation more or less often, your nebulisation time will vary as well.  If you use it more than three times a day when you are unwell, or if you have COPD, we recommend choosing a more robust model of Nebuliser that does not require a long cool down time between uses.
  3. Do you need to carry the nebuliser everywhere such as if you travel a lot?

Please contact us to make an appointment.  During this appointment you will receive a demonstration of the use of the Nebuliser and the giving set, you will also be provided with written resources.
